Part of the Vegardi app The fragile fortnight

The garden starts before anything is green.

Seed Starter walks you through how to sow and how to care for a tray through germination, then keeps the tray with you: you sow it in the app, you see what should be happening at this stage, you get advice when nothing moves, and when the seedling goes into the garden you move it there in the app too, so the plant carries its record from day one.

A seed tray with nothing showing yet

The silent fortnight

Day nine. The tray is still just dark soil, and nothing tells you whether that is normal or already wrong. Nothing to see, nobody to ask, and no way to know if you should still be waiting.

The question was never "how do seeds germinate." It was "what should be happening in my tray, right now."

This is what comes back.

A tray that is not moving gets a worked answer, not a shrug.

Worth a change

What should be happening now

By this point the seed should have taken up water, swollen and split its coat, with the first root pushing down before anything appears above the surface. That part is invisible, which is why a quiet tray tells you so little on its own.

What usually holds a tray back

Four things, in order of how often they are the answer: the medium sits colder than it looks, especially overnight; moisture swings between soaked and dry; the seed went in deeper than it can push through; or the seed was already past its years. Your setup and your days elapsed point at the first two.

What to change today

Steady the warmth through the night and keep the medium evenly damp rather than wet. Do not dig up a cell to check: disturbing it now costs more than waiting. If it is still quiet in three days, sow a few cells again, shallower, as insurance.

And when the tray is simply taking its time, it says that instead: quiet at this stage is normal here, nothing to change. No false alarms, and no guilt over soil that is doing exactly what it should.

What you get

A seed cracking open, the first root emerging
  • Detailed sowing guidance, and how to care for the tray through the germination days.
  • You sow it in the app, so the tray has a record from day zero, before there is anything to see.
  • You know what should be happening now, including the part that happens underground.
  • Advice when nothing moves, instead of a fortnight of guessing on your own.
  • No false alarms: a tray that is simply taking its time is called normal.
  • You move the seedling to the garden in the app too, so the plant carries a full record from its first day.

Why the fortnight needs a witness

Germination is where most first seasons quietly end: everything that matters happens out of sight, so a grower cannot tell patience from a problem. A tray you sowed in the app is a tray you can follow, ask about, and fix.

And when nothing comes up, you get advice. Not a shrug, and not a replacement pod.

Questions growers ask

Is there an app that helps with starting seeds?
Yes. Vegardi, the home food-growing app, includes Seed Starter: detailed guidance on how to sow and how to care for a tray through germination, sowing recorded in the app as you do it, a clear view of what should be happening at this stage, advice when nothing moves, and a move-to-the-garden step that keeps the plant's record intact from day one. Built for edible plants grown at home.
Why are my seeds not germinating?
Usually one of four things: the medium is colder than it looks, moisture has swung between soaked and dry, the seed went in too deep, or the seed is past its viable years. The hard part is that germination happens out of sight, so you cannot tell waiting from failing. Because you sowed the tray in the app, Seed Starter knows how long it has been and what should be happening by now, and gives you advice on that instead of a general list.
How long do seeds take to germinate?
It ranges more than most people expect: some crops crack in three to five days, while others, like peppers, parsley and carrots, can honestly take up to three weeks. So the number alone never tells you whether to worry. What helps is knowing how long your own tray has been in, and what should be happening by now, which is what Seed Starter keeps in front of you.
Does it track the tray before anything sprouts?
Yes, and that is the point. You sow the tray in the app as you fill it, so the record starts at day zero, before there is anything to see. When the seedling is ready you move it to the garden in the app as well, and it arrives at its slot on the Planting Map with its whole history attached.
I grow in soil. Can I use Seed Starter?
Seed starting itself happens in trays either way. The app's full tracking is built for hydroponic systems today; the soil version is in development, and you can join the waitlist to enter its beta as a Founding Grower.
Is Seed Starter free?
